Deadliest Catch RS3: Capture Thalassus

By Jesus Marquez | Created: April 26, 2024 | Last updated: July 11, 2025 | Read Time: 8 minutes

Being part of the community during the launch of this quest was a great moment; however, if you are about to go through Deadliest Catch RS3, you must know this is a master quest, where Jagex launched a poll to ask the community which name should have the new massive fish. This quest revolves around this fish, Thalassus, who has been terrorizing the sailors in the cold and inhospitable ocean to the north. This fish is the same size as the Wizards' Tower and devours sailors, but they are still alive in its belly. You will help Fisherman Jones end this scary story by landing this beast. So, let's catch that fish!

RS3 Requirements Deadliest Catch

The requirements for this quest are simple, so you don't need any fancy items, but you will notice this is a Member-only quest with a short to medium length; this means you don't need to spend a lot of time going through the Deadliest Catch RS3 quest. Here's the list of everything you will need to complete this quest:

  • 70 Fishing
  • 3 Herblore
  • 67 Hunter
  • 70 Thieving

Any way for faster access to the Fishing Guild (Ardougne Lodestone Home Teleport, A Skill Necklace, Lunar Spellbook, Ardougne Teleport, or Manor Farm Teleport)

A way to reach the Tower of Life (Kandarian Monastery Teleport, Portable Fairy Ring, Dramen Staff, or Lunar Staff) If you complete A Fairy Tale III - Battle at Ork's Rift, it won't be necessary.

Deadliest Catch RS3 Guide

To begin the quest, you must find Jones outside the Fishing Guild bank and talk to him. Jones is a seasoned fisherman who wants the glory of catching Thalassus, the legendary sea monster.

The Hunting & Sea Chart

Jones wants to find an experienced fisherman to help him in this endeavor. Once you finish your conversation with him, he will reveal he needs your help to enlist a rower, obtain a Sea Chart of the area, and forge a Giant Harpoon that can take Thalassus down. Jones will also give you some harpoon plans.

He also recommends pickpocketing the Master Fisher to find the sea chart since he won't sail without it. He's at the entrance of the Fishing Guild. You may have to make a few attempts before you successfully pickpocket the Master Fisher and obtain the chart, but once you get it, you must then ask him about finding a Master Smith to continue with the RS3 Deadliest Catch quest.

The Giant Harpoon

The Master Fisher will tell you that Linza, a local smith working on a few projects for the fisherman of the area, might help you with this task. You must speak with the Master Fisherman before searching for Linza because she won't appear without this conversation. You can find her in Hemenster, north and slightly east of the Fishing Guild.

To move forward with Deadliest Catch RS3, you must talk to her about making the Giant Harpoon, and she will be interested in what you tell her when you mention Thalassus. She will remember her adventures and experience hunting cryptid creatures named Crackjaw. After telling you about it, she will agree to help you and make the harpoon for you if you give her one of Thalassus' Teeth in return for the favor. Once the deal is closed, she will hand you the Giant Harpoon and ask for an extra Rower.

The Rower

Your new task is to recruit a Rower, so head to the Tower of Life, southeast of Ardougne. You can use the Kandarian Monastery Teleport to reach the monastery south of Ardougne. In any case, you don't have the option to use this teleport. A Fairy Ring with the code DJP will work, too, but you will be slightly further from the teleport; you just need to run west. Moreover, you can use the Lodestone network if it works best for you.

Upon your arrival, speak to 'The Guns,' Jones's cousin. You can find him lifting a log outside the tower. He will tell you he has seasickness when traveling out to sea, and he can't assist you in your endeavor for that reason. 'The Guns' will mention his cousin made him a Sea Legs Potion when they went fishing. You must prepare him that potion to move forward with Deadliest Catch RS3.

To prepare the Sea Legs Potion, you will need Lowland Heather combined with Builder's Tea, which you can obtain from Bonafido, located near the entrance of the Tower of Life. You will find patches of Lowland Heather surrounding the tower, but you will only see one that will work for the potion since most of them are infected with aphids. You will find a row with three Lowland Heather plants on the east side from the center of the Tower of Life. Only one of these doesn't have aphids, and you can pick it up without a problem.

Once you get the plant, you must ask Bonafido for some Builder's Tea. When he gives you tea, you must combine the Lowland Heather with the Builder's Tea to create the Sea Legs Potion. Return where 'The Guns' is, and give him the brewed potion. He will be satisfied and offer to take you back to the Fishing Guild to meet with Jones.

Sea & Mermaids

In the next phase of RS3 Deadliest Catch, you will return to the Fishing Guild, and you must talk to Jones to finally sail the boat to the sea. The small vessel will arrive at the wreckage, and you must investigate some wrecks to find and reveal part of Thalassus's trail. You will use a similar method to track animals using Hunter skill, but you will follow the trail instead of paw prints. When you investigate the correct wreckage at the end of the debris, you will find the new debris trial.

You will see a bar that will fill when you investigate the wrong wreck; you're allowed to fail five times when investigating. The trail will reset after the bar is full, but the solution will remain the same. When you are investigating the shipwrecks, you will have the possibility to loot various items from them.

Once you complete the trail in Deadliest Catch RS3, you will uncover Thalassus, and it will show on the surface, knocking you and Jones overboard and swallowing Jones. Your fate is different; you will wash up on the shore of a small island, where you will see the Deadliest Catch Mermaids in RS3. Three mermaids will mock the expedition and tell you they are loyal to the Thalassus. These mermaids are confident and will say that Jones with the Giant Harpoon is a danger to Thalassus, who is now inside the monster's belly.

Your move here is to diminish the confidence of the mermaids; you must select the following dialogues:

  1. The Thalassus has eaten Jones, the mighty fisherman.
  2. It should; he's been hunting for decades.
  3. Very horrid! After he's killed the Thalassus, he'll probably come after you.
  4. Trust me, I'm a great adventurer, I should know.
  5. Did I mention Jones has a harpoon with him?
  6. It's no ordinary harpoon.

If you try to choose a different option from any of these dialogues, the mermaids' confidence will be reset, and you will have to start all over again.

Return To Sea

After you make the mermaids fear Thalassus is in danger, they will help you track down the monster once more to make it explode Jones from its bowels. At this point of RS3's Deadliest Catch, you must return with the boat to the wreckage and track the trail again. During this second wreck investigation, you will have the possibility to loot three additional items, so you can search them up if you want.

This time will differ from before, but it remains the same concept. When you reach the trail's end, you will see Thalassus emerging to the surface, and 'The Guns' will throw Karambwan at the monster. After Thalassus eats the Karambwan, it will sick up and expel Jones back onto the boat. After this, 'The Guns' will make a break to land.

Once you return to the Fishing Guild, Jones will tell you that he managed to get a tooth from Thalassus. With this tooth, you must head to Hemenster and give it to Linza. After you do so, return one more time to the Fishing Guild and talk to Jones to complete the quest.
