RS3: While Guthix Sleeps - All You Need to Know

This chapter of our blog series will discuss the RuneScape 3 quest "While Guthix Sleeps." Before you get too comfortable, ensure your RS membership is up to date, as this quest is members-only. You'll also want to clear your schedule, as this quest is time-consuming, as well as being Grandmaster. This fact leaves many wondering, 'Should I do While Guthix Sleeps?' but at DivicaSales, we believe in no pain, no gain! With this in mind, let's check out the finer details.

While Guthix Sleeps Requirements

One of the first things you'll want to be aware of is what are the requirements for while Guthix sleeps in RS3, so let's take a look. Let's start with skill level requirements. 

Skill Requirements 

Here are the skills you will need to double check before beginning:

  • Agility - 25
  • Defense - 65
  • Farming - 65
  • Herblore - 65
  • Hunter - 55
  • Magic - 75
  • Summoning - 23 
  • Thieving - 60

With skill levels out of the way, let's look at the quests you need to complete for entrance to the While Guthix Sleeps RS3 quest. 

Quest Requirements 

While Guthix Sleeps just got a whole lot longer for those who are yet to complete the following quests:

  • Defender of Varrock
  •  Dream Mentor
  • The Hand in the Sand
  • King's Ransom
  • Legend's Quest
  • The Path of Glouphrie
  • Tears of Guthix
  • Wanted!
  • The Hunt for Surok 

You must also be able to enter the Warrior's Guild to participate in While Guthix Sleeps. Now, onto item requirements!

Item Requirements 

Ensure your inventory is well organized before you get started. You will need the following throughout: 

  • Sapphire Lantern 
  • Runes (3 Air, 1 Earth, 1 Fire, 1 Water, 1 Mid, 1 Law, and 1 Death.)
  • A Log (NOT Acadia Log)
  • A charcoal and papyrus 
  • Lantern Lens
  • Mort Myre fungus 
  • Unpowered Orb
  • Ring of Chaos 
  • 5,000 Coins
  • Equipment for entering Black Knights' Fortress 
  • Runes for casting NPC Contact spell x4 (8 Air, 4 Astral, 4 Cosmic)
  • Runes for casting any Charge Orb spell (30 of any element + 3 Cosmic)
  • Equipment for two separate attack styles. 
  • Snapdragon Seed

RS3 While Guthix Sleeps Recommendations 

Within this next segment of our RuneScape 3 quest guide, we will discuss some of the recommended items, quests, and more. Although these recommendations are not mandatory for the completion of While Guthix Sleeps, they will undoubtedly ease the struggle of the battle. As for the recommended quests, there is only one in addition to requirements Nature Spirit. So, with that said, let's take a look!

While Guthix Sleeps - Enemies to Slay

Now that we have discussed the requirements and the recommendations for this quest let's look at who you will be taking on throughout. 

  • 2 Assassins (Level 42)

When working through While Guthix Sleeps in RS3, you will encounter these enemies relatively quickly. During the encounter, they will attempt to assassinate Thaerisk Cemphier, a mission they were issued by the spy network Lucien. 

  • Mercenary Mage (Level 70)

You will encounter this foe during the battle in Mcgrubor's Wood. He will be amongst several Mercenary Axemen as they try to take down followers of Armadyl behind the woods. 

Note that the Mage will teleport once you make an attempt on his life.

  • 2 Mercenary Axemen (Level 91)

As mentioned above, Mcgrubor's Wood is where you will see these Axemen. They will attack Armadyl Guardians, who you must protect. 

  • 3 Elite Black Knights (level 100)

The 3 Knights can be found in Lucien's Camp during this quest. Their ability to use prayer is why it is recommended that players enter the quest with at least two attack styles. Wearing the recommended Elite Black Armor (or Dagon'hai Robes) makes the Knights and others in the dungeon tolerant.

  •  Balance Elemental (Level 117)

This enemy was created by Guthix through fusing Aeternam with four Druids and their elemental and temporal powers. The Balance Elemental can use three attack styles, so a Protection Prayer is recommended to block damage.

  • 2 Tormented Demons (Level 119)

These huge demons are controlled by Mahjarret Lucien and are placed in a state of perpetual physical agony to increase hostility and aggression. Once again, this enemy can switch between all three attack styles, something to keep in mind when tackling this quest. 

Where to Start With While Guthix Sleeps in RS3?

Remember, the first foes you will encounter in this RuneScape 3 quest are the 2 Assassins. So, make sure you have the equipment for battle at the ready; once you're prepared, talk to Radimus Erkle in the Legends Guild. He will turn you to Ivy Sophista, who can be found in Taverley. She leads a mission in Karamja to establish a new temple worshiping Guthix. 

Radimus won't reveal much about this mission, but he will give you a message for Ivy, "Our friend in common places great faith in totems." 

Make your way to Ivy and pass the message; when you do, she will inform you the plans mentioned above are false and a ruse to protect Radimus. She will then tell you to speak with Thaerisk Cemphier (found upstairs).

The Next Steps for While Guthix Sleeps 

Make your way upstairs to Thaerisk, ensuring your weapons are at the ready; the Assassins' battle is just around the corner. 

When speaking with Thaerisk, he will confirm Ivy's story of the plan being a cover. While discussing his organization, Crux Eqal, and Lucien and his attempt to become a God using the Staff of Armadyl, the 2 Assassins will make their appearance. They will use ranged attacks but don't worry; they aren't much of a challenge to defeat; do so and return to your conversation. 

Thaerisk will continue informing you of Crux Eqal and its efforts to build a base against Lucien. They are doing so with their allies, Temple Knights, and the Guardians of Armadyl. 

Now comes your next task for this RuneScape 3 quest. Spies have been reportedly located in Draynor Village with Movario. Thaerisk wants more information on Movario, so you must speak with Varrock librarian Reldo.

Once you have located Reldo in the Library, talk with him about the mysterious Movario. His knowledge is vast, and he will inform you of the following facts about Movario: 

  • He has a slight Khazard accent. 
  • He shows an interest in traps, housing improvement, and divination. 

He will inform you also that 'No-Fingers McGrew' has allegedly said, "Solving the puzzle arms the traps." Following this, he will read to you from some of the oldest archived documents. The languages are barely decipherable but hold the key to Movarios' location. Reldo will sarcastically ask, "Do I look like an expert tracker?" then indicating that some jungle creatures with tracking abilities may be useful in your pursuit. 

RS3 While Guthix Sleeps - Jungle Excursion 

It is at this point in your adventure you will need to use your Logs and Mort Myre Fungus. Once you have prepared yourself, seek out the Hunting Expert; you can find her in the Feldip Hunter area in her hut. 

Ask the Hunting Expert for her opinion on animals that are helpful with tracking using scent. Her answer will be to harness a Broav, an RS creature renowned for its powerful sense of smell. These animals are notoriously hard to catch; luckily, the hunter knows the only location where a trap can be set. 

You will need bait to lure the Broav; fortunately, in this quest, the Hunting Expert will provide you with the mushrooms needed to do so. Next, you will need to make your way to the pit (west of the hunters' cabin) and build a pitfall trap. To do so, use your knife and log, and for the final touch, place the bait within the trap. 

Once the trap is assembled, stand back and wait. Soon after, a Broav should approach, sniffing out the treat and trapping itself. When this occurs, dismantle the trap and place the unconscious Broav in your inventory; following this, head back to the Hunting Expert, who will then train your new Broav to track a scent. 

Tracking Down Movario While Guthix Sleeps

For the next leg of this RuneScape 3 quest guide journey, you're going to need the following:

  •  Ring of Chaos
  • 5000 coins (Bribery for those without Ring of Chaos)
  • Runes (Mind, Air, Earth, Fire)
  • Combat Equipment 
  • Good
  • Blood Burst/Barrage
  • Six open inventory slots

Now that you're on your mission to sniff out Movario, you're going to need something to give your Broav to catch a scent. We recommend heading to Khazard in search of options. Speak with Angor in a bar close by the 'Khazard Fight Arena'; he will inform you Movario is frequently spotted taking laundry to a nearby house. 

Next, make your way to said Laundry house, which is located just west of the Fight Arena. Enter with your Ring of Chaos activated and charm the launderer into giving you Movarios dirty laundry. Now, the search truly begins! 

Drop your Broav, using the dirty laundry, activating the creature's talent, and taking you to Movario. 

Note: Broav can easily become stuck behind items and obstacles. To unstick your new friend and continue your search, move around the affecting obstacle and use "call pet" to continue. You will then be led to a north-westerly building within the Battlefield; the gnomes and Khazard troops are locked in battle. The door to the building will be locked, but you can climb a nearby broken wall. 

Call your Broav, then use the clothes to catch a scent again; you will soon see the message "It seems that the Broav has found something interesting with this table". Search the table; you should find a trapdoor that leads to a dungeon. 

Entering Movario's Base in RS3's While Guthix Sleeps 

The next step to completing the While Guthix Sleeps quest is to enter the trapdoor and walk the passage until you come to a crossroads. Take the northern curving path until you come to an end; here, you should see a set of stairs; make your way down. At the south end of the adjoining corridor, you will find a battered old door. You can not open this door as it is locked. You will need to search the door to read the sign. 

"Further Access Prohibited" will read on the sign. When looking closely, you should see that one of the letters has been replaced by a rune. The same rune must be used to unlock the door and disarm the first of the two traps within. Remain vigilant, as an incorrect rune will fire an unlockable blast spell that will deal 250 damage. If you do make an error, pay attention to the color of the blast damage, it will indicate the color of the rune needed. 

Check out the list of letters, runes, and corresponding colors. Note that only one letter in the game will be altered at any given time. 

  • (O) Mind Rune - Purple 
  • (H) Earth Rune - Green
  • (E) Air Rune - White
  • (E) Fire Rune - Red
  • (D) Water Rune - Blue

When entering the correct rune, a click can be heard. Search the door for a second time and locate the second trap. Again, failure to disarm the trap or attempting to open the door without disarming will result in 350 damage + 88 damage poison. If this is the case, three Elite Khazard guards will appear, defeat them and resume disarming the trap. Once you have succeeded, proceed to enter the door. 

An Electrifying Ordeal in While Guthix Sleeps

Upon entering the room, you will be greeted by a message informing you that the floor has slightly sunken beneath you. Within the room, there will be a collection of bookcases with wires connecting them. Next, make your way to a painting on the east wall and inspect it; you should uncover a small room with some weights, a thermometer, and a drawer. These items and areas are not needed yet, but keep them in mind. 

To open the cage door within the room, you must divert the power from the gate into the wires. Do so by searching the bookcases until an audible click is heard. Follow the dimly lit pulsing wire to the next bookshelf to search. Continue this process until the electric door is opened. 

During the process of disarming the gate, you will see one of the following three messages; we will explain their significance to the situation below. Also, keep in mind that the process can be reset, so stay patient. 

  • "You pull the book lever and hear a faint click but notice nothing, in particular, is happening" - This means you need to try a different bookcase.
  • "You pull the book lever." "CLICK!" - You are on the right track; follow the brighter wire to the next shelf. 
  • "CLICK! Chherrkizzz. You hear a clicking sound coming from the north." - The electronic door is now disabled and can now be opened. 

Once you are through the door, search the stairs. Without doing so, you will not be able to disarm the trap. If you fail to do so, you will be dealt a maximum of 1500 damage. 

Movarios Study - Watch for Traps!

Within the study, you will see a treasure box. Ignore it, as taking something will trigger a trap, decreasing life points by 500. You will also be disappointed to learn the treasure within is fake. Instead, search the desk to locate the first volume of Movario's notes; read them. 

Next, in While Guthix Sleeps, you must search the waste-paper basket beside the desk to find the Ruby Key. Once you have acquired the key, turn your attention to the bookcase west of your current location. Search the bookshelf and use the Ruby Key on it to reveal the set of steps in the northwest corner. 

After climbing the stairs, search the bed and remove the covers. This will reveal a hidden chest; you just then conduct a second check of the bed to find "gadgetry" on the bed chest. Again, repeat your inspection, this time on the bed chest; this will dismantle the trap. Once you have ensured the trap is disarmed, use the Ruby Key once more on the chest. 

Using the key and searching the chest will award you:

  • A strange key loop 
  • Strange key teeth
  • Movario's Notes - Volume II

Once you have these items, make sure to read the notes. It is also vital you do not drop the notes after reading; you'll want to show them to Thaerisk.

While Guthix Sleeps - Exit Strategy Issues

Now you have gathered intel and gained some items, it's time to make your way out of the study, but there are a few problems. All exit strategies are either blocked or unavailable. Teleportation is blocked by some form of Magic, and the regular exit you entered via is once again armed as another trap. Because of these hurdles, you will be forced to find another method of exiting. 

Head back to the wire room and begin searching the drawers in the small east room we mentioned earlier. Here you will now find 'Notes on Pressure'; you will then need to look at the thermometer; a number should be visible. The number visible represents "Tickits," which is the equivalent of your exact weight upon entering the study. In order to exit, you must match your current weight to the Tickits. To balance the thermometer with your current weight, you must add the weights found earlier to the statue. The weights are 1kg, 2kg, and 5kg. 

While Guthix Sleeps - Fighting for the Truth 

For the next part of this RuneScape 3 quest guide, you will need to make your way back to Thaerisk. This time, he can be located on the first floor of the house just west of Pikkupstix, located in Taverley. 

Show Thaerisk what you found on your quest, but ensure you have all of the notes with you before you do. Without them, Cemphier will send you to retrieve them. 

He will then inform you that Lucien is getting closer to obtaining a powerful artifact, meaning action must be taken immediately. Because of this, Thaerisk will then send you to McGrubor's Wood to speak with the Guardians of Armadyl. 

A cutscene will begin once you make your way to the building in the Woods. Within this cutscene, Lucien's minions can be seen attacking the guardians. First, kill the Axemen and make an attempt on the Mercenary Mage (he will teleport to safety, as briefly discussed.) Then, search the dead enemies to uncover a damaged pendant of Lucien; don't take the pendant. 

Following the brief battle, speak with the wounded guardian. They will ask you to find Idria in "the arms of forester" before falling unconscious. 

From here, make your way to the Seers' Village Pub and speak with Idria. She will inform you of Lucien's plans and his undead army. This is all taking place in the Wilderness to the north, with Lucien's spy network infiltrating Misthalin. She will then inform you that the plan is to capture a spy in Draynor in the hopes of receiving Lucien's whereabouts. 

Your next step in the While Guthix Sleeps adventure will be to talk with Sir Tiffy Cashien in Falador Park, who will then send you to the White Knight's Castle. Once you reach the castle, you should find the three allied organization leaders in the eastern room of the ground floor by the jail cell. The trio will put aside their differences to take down Lucien, giving you a Teleorb to place one of the spies in Draynor Village. 

Once you reach the village, plant the Teleorb on a stranger, be careful not to be caught, they may initiate a fight with you. Then, you can either run until he forgets or engages in battle. If you find placing the orb to be too problematic, try using gloves of silence. 

When you have successfully planted the orb, make your way back to Falador and speak with Thaerisk and Akrisae. The spy will be teleported to the cell, and a Druid will bring you truth serum. Unfortunately, in an effort to administer the serum, a cutscene ensues. You will see that despite the guards on hand, the spy puts up a fight, and the vial is broken. 

Quickly make your way to Betty in Port Sarim, taking a snapdragon seed with you, and have her enchant it. 

Extracting the Truth

Following your journey to acquire the truth serum, return to Falador and speak once again with Thaerisk regarding the truth and how to acquire it. Next, you must speak with Idria; she will ask you to recruit the following characters in the war against Lucien. 

  • Duradel 
  • Hazelmere
  • Mazchna
  • Turael 

With growing numbers, it is time to find out the truth! In the room where the leaders reside, open the cupboard and take papyrus and charcoal. You will next want to give the spy the truth serum, listening closely to his answers as he informs you of who his master is. Finally, make sure to sketch the likeness told to you and pass it on to Idria, who will then make posters searching for Dark Squall. 

As you have now successfully extracted the information, Idria will have a new task for you, recruiting more associates. So, you must then locate the following: 

  • Ghommal 
  • Harrallak 
  • Sloane
  • Cyrisus 

Keep in mind that Cyrisus can only be contacted using the NPC Contact Spell. 

Akrisae will then be waiting to speak with you. But first, he needs you to locate Silif, who has been missing since the manhunt for Dark Squall began. He was last seen entering the Black Knights Fortress; find him. 

Finding The Dark Squall in RS3's While Guthix Sleeps

As the pressure is rising in this RuneScape 3 quest and the brutal battles are approaching, you'll need to prepare the following: 

  • 13 free inventory spaces
  • Black Knight Armor
  • Unpowered Orb
  • Food
  • Bronze helm 
  • Iron chainbody

Now that you're prepared make your way to the Black Knights Fortress and equip the bronze helm and iron chain body. 

Entering the Establishment 

When you reach the front entrance, open the portcullis and go down the ladder located at the southwest corner. By the east wall, you should search the floor tile with an orb marking. Cast a charge spell on the tile using the Unpowered Orb to reveal another trap door. This act will destroy the orb, but the door will remain. 

Climb down the trap door ladder, initiating a battle between yourself and l Elite Black Knights accompanied by their ranger, Mage, or warrior. You must kill 3 of the knights and collect an "Elite Black Armor" set. Equipping the full set will remove their aggression. 

Next, on this RuneScape 3 quest, you must head north and do so by jumping across the broken bridge. From there, go east and climb the wall, running north and over the barricade. Once you have done so, walk northwest of the barricade until you find a fork in the road and take the eastern path until you find some jail cells; Silif is in one. Speak with him. He will tell you he feels weak. 

After speaking with Silif, double back to the fork in the road, this time taking the northern path until you reach the northern door. Search the wardrobes and desks within the room; you should locate the following: 

  • Dagon'hai robes
  • Elite black armor 
  • Strange Teleorb
  • A lobster 
  • Restore potion

Return to Silifs cell and unlock the door, giving him the food and potion to allow him to recover. Give him the Elite Black Armor and lead Silif to the maps on the southern wall of the northern room. He will then tell you he needs some time to study the map and will give you a Teleorb to plan on Dark Squall.

The plan to do so will be successful; however, you will be recognized. At this point, Dark Squall will reveal his identity to be Surok. He will then unleash his minions' wrath on you, meaning all those in his base become aggressive toward you. 

Your best chance of escape is to teleport. However, if you are unable to do so, activate Protect or Deflect Magic and make a run for it. 

Lucien's Wrath

For the next leg of the While Guthix Sleeps journey, you're going to want to speak with Akrisae in Falador. He suggests impersonating Surok using his robes to infiltrate Lucien's base. Dress in the Dagon'hai robes and enter the close-by jail cell; the Teleorb used on Surok will imprison him there while you are teleported to Surok's hideout. 

It is critical you have all you need before making this trip as if you need to teleport out. You can only re-enter using the tunnels you used to find Silif. 

An Inside Job

Once inside, climb the leader in the northeastern corner and stand inside the stone circle at the center of the room. When inside the circle, use the Strange Teleorb to teleport into Lucien's Camp near the Gods War Dungeon. After speaking with an Elite Black Knight, he will inform you Lucien is recruiting, and you need to head to the chapel to observe.

Take the northeastern path to the chapel and climb the ice wall, jump the ledge to the chapel, and walk east. This will bring on a cut scene. 

Within this cutscene, Lucien will emerge from a nearby cave, raising several undead heroes as he does so. He will also let it be known he is aware of your presence and attacks using Magic that you avoid. Hazelmere will sense the danger, teleporting in with the rest of the fellowship. 

A battle ensues, and six of the fellowship are lost. Lucien will then set his guards on you. The cutscene will then end, leaving you on the chapel ledge, jump across to the nearby snow wall and go back to Falador. 

The Ancient Temple of Where Guthix Sleeps

Back in Falador, speak with Idria, who will let you know Movario has been on the move; last spotted at Lumbridge Swamps looking for the Fist of Guthix. 

Your next challenge in While Guthix Sleeps in RunScape is to speak with him while impersonating Surok to gather more intel. So ensure you're still wearing the Dagon'hai robe set and have a Sapphire Lantern before heading to the Tears of Guthix cavern. Once inside, speak with Movario; he believes that the Stone of Jas resides under the tavern in a chasm but has no way of getting there. You must then volunteer to go on his behalf and explore. Use your lantern to attract a light creature and opt to enter the chasm. 

Heading into the Unknown

Upon entering the chasm, search the Skeletons in the surrounding area for a silver sickle and six Druid pouches. You will then need to search two nearby rocks located in the northern corner and uncover two smashed braziers; then, use a chisel to smash them and get a Fire orb as well as an Earth orb. There are also two intact air and water braziers which you can chisel to obtain the Air orb and Water orb. 

From here, head south and reach the three skull cavities in the southern wall, examining each recessed block and using the respective orb on said block. You'll then have to climb the wall twice, using the Water orb on the recessed block, before climbing down again and entering the third lower skull's nose cavity. You'll need to crawl the tunnel of each cavity to its end, examining the door at the end. Insert the corresponding key into the lock and crawl back to exit the skull. 

Climb back to the upper skull, this time using the fire key on the recessed block, and then search the stone cube in front of the skull. You'll then need to enter the cave opening; Welcome to the Ancient Guthix Temple. 

Into the Temple

For your next task in While Guthix Sleeps, you're going to need at least two empty inventory slots, though having extra empty will speed up the process. You will also want to ensure you have disarmed any Porter effects. 

Within the temple, there are eight statues, upon examination, you will see that each statue corresponds to the creation of a different potion. So, you will next need to use your Druid pouches on the Druid Spirits. This will cause them to drop the necessary ingredients for the statues' potions. 

Note that if you are unable to collect the items in the allotted time or drop them, you will be forced to find your own resources. 

You're then going to have to use the herbs and ingredients on the statues; each statue represents a different skill; they are as follows. 

  • Agility - Clean Toadflax + Toad's Legs
  • Attack - Clean Guam + Eye of Newt
  • Balance - Clean Harralander + Red Spider eggs + Garlic + Silver dust
  • Combat - Clean Harralander + Goat Horn Dust
  • Defense - Clean Cadantine + White Berries
  • Energy - Clean Harralander + Chocolate Dust
  • Fishing - Clean Avantoe + Snape Grass
  • Hunter - Clean Avantoe + Kebbit Teeth Dust 
  • Clean Lantadyme + Potato Cactus
  • Prayer - Clean Ranarr + Snape Grass
  • Ranging - Clean Dwarf Weed + Wine of Zamorak
  • Restoration - Clean Snapdragon + Red Spiders Eggs 
  • Strength - Clean Tarromin + Limpwurt Root

While Guthix Sleeps End Game - The Stone of Jas

Now we're well into the endgame stages of the RS3 While Guthix Sleeps quest, preparation is truly key. So, make sure you are ready for the battle against the level 102 Balance Elemental, as all three combat styles can be used against you, lowering your combat stats. If necessary, you can leave the area to acquire the needed supplies, but ensure your lit Sapphire Lantern is with you upon return. 

Next, you will need to make sure you have at least two combat styles for the battle with the Tormented Demon. The Balance Elemental will drain your combat stats in battle, so bring at least one full super restore. Once you have prepared yourself, head down the corridor and enter the large chamber. 

When you're ready to begin, search the mysterious stone on the raised platform, this will bring on a cutscene. This will showcase the materialization of the Balance Elemental. The fight will ensue, and you must defeat the Elemental. Once you have done so, touch the Mysterious Stone again. This will once again bring on a cutscene revealing that it is actually the Stone of Jas. This will also boost your combat stats to level 255 (excluding prayer).

Master of A Thousand Curses

The discovery of the stone will make Movario and Darve appear. Speak with Movario first, running through all of the options in order, and do the same with Lucien; after which, both will teleport, taking the Stone of Jas and summoning Tormented Demons to attack.

Remember to swap your attack styles at the correct time to swiftly win the battle. Following a no-doubt successful win, speak with Idria, and she will congratulate you and teleport you back to Falador.
